According to folklore, some high-quality tea leaves are grown on cliffs, which are difficult for humans to pick, so monkeys are trained to pick them. Therefore, some no-name but high-quality teas are all named as "Monkey-Picked", symbolizing the rarity and high quality. In fact, there is not a single tea breed called Monkey-Picked. In modern times, Monkey-Picked is mostly used to describe some high quality oolong teas and unnamed teas, such as Supreme Tieguanyin.

Monkey-Picked is produced in Anxi, Fujian Province. It undergoes traditional fermentation and roasting in high heat. The color of the tea leaves becomes black and slick, the infusion color is dark, and the caramelization makes the tea have aromas such as caramel and fried rice, and the taste is mellow and sweet.
